Why Are Rapid Shutdown Devices Causing Global Attention ?

25/04/2022

At present, achieving the goal of "carbon neutrality" has become a global consensus, and the new energy industry represented by photovoltaics is booming. However, with the rapid increase of photovoltaic installed capacity, the safety issues caused by photovoltaic power plants have attracted much attention. In this regard, many countries have made clear regulations on the safety of photovoltaic power plants, and emphasized the importance of "Rapid Shutdown Device" ( for short RSD ).

"Rapid shutdown devices should be installed in PV power plants

Recently, the Thai government authority EIT (Engineering Institute of Thailand) released the latest Thailand National Electrical Code. Among them, the specification requires that the roof photovoltaic power station must be installed with a quick shutdown device, and the distance from the photovoltaic matrix is 300mm as the limit, and it is stipulated that "the voltage within the boundary range within 30 seconds after the device starts to drop below 80V, and the voltage outside the limit range drops below 30V.

The Philippines, Germany, Canada, Austria and other countries have also issued relevant regulations one after another, requiring photovoltaic power plants to cut off the high voltage on the DC side through a module-level quick shutdown device in an emergency to ensure system safety.

How rapid shutdown ensure PV system safety ?

Due to complex factors such as installation environment and product quality, the risk of fire in traditional photovoltaic power plants is relatively high, and more than 80% of the fires in power plants are caused by DC side faults. Because the voltage of the photovoltaic system is relatively high when generating electricity, and there is always current in the equipment and circuit. Therefore, after a fire occurs in a traditional power station, even if the power is turned off, there are still hundreds or even thousands of volts of DC high voltage in the system. At this point, if firefighters rush to rescue, it will have tragic consequences.

The emergence of component-level rapid shutdown devices can "solve" the above problems. In the event of an emergency such as a fire in the photovoltaic power station, the operation and maintenance personnel or firefighters only need to turn off the device to quickly disconnect the connection between each photovoltaic module in a short time, thereby eliminating the DC high voltage existing in the photovoltaic system array. , to ensure the personal safety of firefighters, so that the photovoltaic power station can be maintained in time, and the property loss can be minimized.

At present, developed countries such as Europe and the United States have more and more perfect laws and regulations for rapid shutdown. Although domestically, due to a series of factors such as cost, it is still necessary to promote the safe and orderly development of photovoltaic power plants and comprehensively promote the installation of rapid shutdown. It must be difficult, but relevant safety standards have been gradually introduced at all levels. It has to be said that rapid shutdown is a very important function for the safety of photovoltaic power plants.

It is believed that with the continuous advancement of technology, the popularization and implementation of safety regulations, and the gradual strengthening of safety awareness, more and more rapid shutdowns will escort more power stations.
